Short Film vs. Feature Length Film

The short film and the feature film of 9 were very different experiences. The short film had an aspect of ambiguity that the feature film lacked. Less was explained in an overall sense, so a lot of what was shown was left up to interpretation. The plot of the short and the message conveyed can be understood in a multitude of ways by the audience. There is a lot of gray area that leaves room for different analyses of the short. The short film was also centered heavily around 9 and his development, while the feature film focused more on the progress of the post-apocalyptic world as a whole. The feature length film had so much more to offer than the short did in terms of character and plot development, directorial style, and special effects. The feature length film took full advantage and exploited each of the characters, giving the audience a deeper understanding of their actions and the motives behind them. Additionally, a big part of what contributed to the development of the full length film was dialogue. The short did not feature any dialogue whatsoever and so the relationships between the characters were left unexplored. The internal feelings of the characters were also left unsaid. The feature film also had a major beneficial attribute that the short lacked: the theme of the consequences of innovation was made far more apparent. In the short, the reason for the state of the world was not made clear and left audiences likely wondering what had brought the characters to this point. Furthermore, the way the full film elaborated on the identities of the characters to such an extent that the audience felt connected to them was very different from the short. Each character had their own voice, their own quirks, their own desires, and their own emotional ties. By including these ties the director definitely was able to engage the audience far more than in the short. Personally, I enjoyed the feature length film much more than the short. The short film left me slightly confused and feeling as though I was missing parts of the story necessary for my comprehension. The feature length allowed me to get to know the characters and what they were fighting for. Both movies were well done, but the full length has a much better development in every aspect.
