9, The Feature Film
The full length feature of 9 was quite intense and followed a well-developed storyline filled with action and mystery. The movie centered around a post-apocalyptic world and featured small figurines sculpted by a doctor. The figurines fought for their lives throughout and one in particular, 9, fought to find out why things were happening the way that they were. There were a lot of things done by the director that contributed to the effects of the film. The audience was able to meet and get to know the characters on a very personal level. This developed each of the characters farther in terms of opinion and helped to justify any of their actions if necessary. The immense character development made the multiple death scenes especially hard to endure. While watching the film, I noticed a few different things that I liked. I appreciated the use of action scenes to keep audience members intrigued, I felt that the action added a lot of intensity to the plot as a whole and therefore to the entirety of the movie. I also liked how the director included a subtle, underlying romantic connection between 9 and 7 just to add some suspense and to further the personal connections between the characters. I thought this was smart because it appeals to a certain audience and it adds another small aspect to the story. I additionally really admired the writers decision to have each of the individual figurines represent the different parts of the doctor’s soul. This was a turning point in the film as it gave a lot of answers that the characters had previously been searching so desperately for. It was clear here that each of the figurines were made to be highly intelligent, much like the man they make up, but each of them had their own traits that combined to make up a full being. 1 was very orderly and type A while 9 had more of an empathetic, curious and selfless manner. 1 was also driven by fear and cowardice, while 9 was driven by wonder and hope. The fact that the doctor felt the need to make the figurines at all is a good representation of his own self doubt, which was arguably present in every figurine character shown. There were a lot of decisions made that I felt contributed to the film in a very positive way. The idea of the movie itself, the unsettling aftermath of a war between man and technology, was exaggerated yet it included details that were not so unrealistic. The use of graphics, character development, storyline and directorial decisions all helped to create a well-rounded film that is entertaining and thought-provoking.
